flooding in Crewe (July 6)

Nantwich and surrounding villages are facing severe disruption as heavy rain causes chaos around the region.

Severe downpours through the night and today (July 6) have left some roads almost impassable, including busy Wellington Road and the A500.

Nantwich Children’s Centre has been closed because of flooding, and other venues are likely to suffer as torrential rain is forecast for much of the day.

The A500 Shavington Bypass was closed eastbound from Cheerbrook roundabout, Nantwich, for almost two hours due to flooding but was later re-opened.

Cheshire East Council said extra highways officers and resources have been pulled in to deal with flooded routes.

The Environment Agency has Cheshire as one of the counties most at risk from flooding over the next 24 to 48 hours as torrential rain filters down.

A spokesman said: “On Friday and Saturday (July 7), severe disruption may result from prolonged and very heavy rain across the north Midlands, far northeast of Wales and southern parts of northern England.

“There could be significant disruption possible across much of the rest of East Anglia, Midlands, northern England and the rest of north Wales on Friday, and parts of northern England on Saturday.

“In there high risk areas where severe disruption is possible, there could be widespread flooding affecting significant numbers of properties and whole communities with a potential danger to life and a risk of motorists becoming stranded.

“River and surface water impacts such as flooding of land, roads and properties and perhaps parts of communities, with damage to buildings and structures are quite likely. Travel disruption is expected with road closures possible.”
