Nantwich Litter Group volunteers at a recent town pick, Clean for the Queen campaign

Nantwich Litter Group had a new volunteer when they were joined by Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire John Dwyer.

Mr Dwyer joined the team of volunteers at Barony Park in Nantwich, following concerns raised by residents about the volume of litter in the town’s parks and surrounding areas.

The former Crewe & Nantwich councillor said: “Groups such as the Nantwich Litter Group provide an outstanding service to the people of Cheshire and I believe they deserve recognition for the work that they do.

“In recent years we have become increasingly dependent on the services of volunteer groups such as this one in Nantwich.

“They do sterling work picking up discarded litter which blights our county.

“However, we must not forget it is an offence, which is why I am asking the public of Cheshire to be responsible and dispose of litter in a sensible way, removing the need for regular litter picking sessions.

“Police officers and PCSOs do have powers to issue fixed penalty notices for litter offences if they see them happening.

“Local Authorities have wardens with similar authority.

“I would hope the public respond in a positive way to ensure that our county is kept as free of litter as is possible.”

Joyce Webb, coordinator of Nantwich Litter Group, said: “Dropping litter is totally unacceptable and it is a problem everyone can help solve by simply taking their litter home.

“People can also help by taking responsibility for the outside of their own properties and streets, leading by example in using bins provided and encouraging pride in our town.”

Anyone caught dropping litter faces a ‘Litter Penalty Notice’ also known as a ‘Fixed Penalty Notice’, with a fine of up to £80.

If you do not pay the fine, you could end up in court and face a fine of up to £2,500 and a criminal record.
