Cheshire FA Senior Cup winners presentation - captain Caspar Hughes lifts the trophy

Nantwich Town will face new opponents in the Cheshire Senior Cup Final after Runcorn Linnets were disqualified.

The Dabbers, current holders, were due to play Runcorn in the final later in the season at the Weaver Stadium.

However, Runcorn were eliminated from the competition by Cheshire County FA at the weekend after it emerged they fielded an ineligible player in their semi-final against Cammell Laird 1907.

Tom Bailey, who made his Runcorn debut in the semi-final, was registered three hours and six minutes past the signing deadline.

Cammell Laird 1907 will now take their place in the final against Nantwich, on a date to be confirmed.

Mike Bignall, chairman of Runcorn, said: “After being informed by Cheshire FA on Saturday evening that we had been excluded from the Cheshire Senior Cup, I felt it was important that the club quickly prepared and released the statement to let our supporters know before the news came from anywhere else.

“The board then spent Saturday evening and Sunday looking for grounds for appeal, but unfortunately this was not possible and we had no option but to accept the FA’s decision.

“I and the rest of the Board apologise unreservedly to everyone involved with Runcorn Linnets FC, as supporters, players, and our much-valued volunteers.

“The oversight cannot be attributed to any single individual; it was an honest mistake, but unfortunately a very costly one.

“I completely understand and share everyone’s frustration and upset.”
