Thieves made a real “boob” when they took on the strong-minded ladies of the Shavington Knit and Natter group!

They were branded ‘scumbags’ on social media after stealing the “buns” from a knitted naked lady post box topper which was made to mark October Breast Cancer awareness month.

But the ladies, determined to keep raising awareness with a smile, teamed up to restore their handiwork which can be seen on Main Road.

Long-standing Knit and Natter member Ali Peake said: “We wanted this topper to help raise awareness about the importance of checking yourself regularly, especially as some of our members and neighbours have been personally affected by breast cancer so we couldn’t believe anyone could be so heartless.

“We designed a cheeky but tasteful “naked lady” topper, complete with carefully crafted buns to preserve her modesty!

“Unfortunately, the buns were mysteriously removed on Saturday night.

“Our resilient crafters weren’t about to let that stop them however!

“We brought her in for a quick repair and gave her some fresh new buns before popping her back in place within days.”

There was outcry in the village when the group posted the incident on Facebook.

Villagers condemned the culprits as ‘scumbugs’ and ‘heartless’ and went on to thank the ladies for their efforts.

Shavington resident Ali added: “Decorating the post box on Main Road with themed toppers has become a favourite tradition of ours.

“Sadly, though, this isn’t the first time one has been damaged or had little pieces taken.

“Each one takes a great deal of time, love and energy to create, so it’s disheartening when thoughtless actions spoil something made with such care for the community.”

The group has since posted a ‘hands-off’ plea: “We would like to say we do have CCTV of two people who were stood at the topper for a few minutes and then walked down Main Road towards Bargain Booze on Saturday night at 11.28pm on video.

“Why would you be out late at night with sharp objects? Please leave our topper alone.”

In September, their design was based on knitted blue forget-me-nots for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Awareness. Others are in the pipeline.

The group was established in 2023 when four neighbours got together to knit a crown for the coronation of King Charles.

There’s now 20 members meeting every second and fourth Monday of the month, 7-9pm, at Shavington Club on Crewe Road.

‘Keeping the Community in Stitches’ is their motto and fellow knitters are welcome to join them.

  1. Old William says:

I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt about the second “o” in “October” but not the missing first “e” in “awareness” – see the photograph!

  2. It’ll only be kids having a laugh , hardly the crime of the century and they didn’t nick the topper just part.
