Show Ready Productions are celebrating romance and finding true love at The Lyceum this week with the musical comedy, The Wedding Singer.
Set in New Jersey in the 1980s, we follow Robbie, lead singer of Simply Wed, a nice guy who believes in true love and romance, but finds himself heartbroken after being dumped at the altar.
I’ve never seen this musical before, but I had seen the film so I was aware of the storyline and what might happen.
Show Ready Productions have produced a fabulous and funny show.
Directed by Benjamin Stubbs and Caroline Coles, the cast gave 110% from the opening number until the very end.
The costumes were unashamedly big and bright, reflecting the fashion of the time, and let’s not forget the hair, some of the wigs in this show were big, and quite rightly so.
I loved the details in the humour, which often went on in the background, particularly in the wedding reception scenes which depicted those awkward moments which always seem to happen at these sorts of events.
Congratulations to musical director Adam Whitehead, as the music sounded sharp and clear throughout the production. I loved Simply Wed and would hire them in a heartbeat.
Kieran Picken gave a brilliant performance as Robbie, he seemed to be on stage for almost the entire show and never missed a note. Dom Burdin was hilarious as Sammy, as was Archer Armstrong as George.
Eleanor Morris gave a strong performance as Julia and sounded amazing, particularly during the numbers ‘Someday’ and ‘Come out of the Dumpster’.
I think the audience fell in love with Tandie Stahl-Stockton who played Holly, she was bold, bubbly and full of fun.
There were so many great numbers in this show, I really enjoyed ‘Casualty of Love’ and ‘All about the Green’.
I also have to mention the performance of ‘Move that Thang’ by Rosie and George, it was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time.
The Wedding Singer is running at The Lyceum until 7th February. If you’re after a feel good show, with a 1980’s musical theme, then this show is definitely for you.
Congratulations to all at Show Ready Productions for a great show. I would quite happily go and watch it all over again.
