Woman in Black - Crewe Lyceum Theatre - frontage - by Jonathan White

The Matrix Cheer Squad promised us a party to celebrate their 20th anniversary at Crewe Lyceum on Sunday – and they did not disappoint with their show MatriXX Revolutions, writes Claire Faulkner.

The squad was set up by Leanne Palin in 2005 to give young people in Crewe a place to learn cheerleading in a positive environment and the opportunity to build confidence and friendships.

They have competed in national and international competitions.

I’m new to watching cheer, and I wasn’t prepared for the amount of energy and fearlessness the squad showed on stage.

The opening number was dramatic; full of stunts, lifts, jumps and tumbles.

I was transfixed for the entire show, it’s fair to say my heart was in my mouth watching some of the stunts. The level of trust the team have in each other is just amazing.

The chorography and synchronicity was excellent, the amount of training, hard work and dedication to achieve this cannot be understated.

I particularly enjoyed the routines to Abracadabra and Men in Black.

The energy on stage was matched by the enthusiasm from the audience, who applauded and encouraged the squad throughout the show.

I think they were one of the loudest audiences I’ve ever heard at The Lyceum.

A fast paced show, with performers who showed courage and absolutely no fear. You’ve got to see a Matrix performance to really believe it.

Congratulations to all involved.
