A Cheshire East councillor has called for urgent action on a Willaston road which regularly floods and was under water for three months last winter, writes Belinda Ryan.
Cllr Allen Gage said cars have been written off in recent years because of the issues on Eastern Road, especially when the water freezes.
He also said a colleague of his had rolled their car on that stretch of road.
“It’s been a longstanding issue,” Cllr Gage told a meeting of Cheshire East Council, adding it had been occurring for about seven years.
“It’s about a foot and a half deep at its worst. It goes across the whole road and last year we had water present for three months solid.
“The issue is getting worse.”
The Willaston and Rope councillor said there is a gully directly under the water and “I don’t see why this can’t be serviced and cleared out”.
He said the flooding occurs on a bend on a 60mph road.
He added: “The section of the road that I’m referring to that runs parallel to the railway track.
“It’s the closest part of this road to the railway track and should a car aquaplane the impact would be somewhere between chaos in terms of the North West train system and could be absolutely horrific for the individuals involved.”
He said schoolchildren also walk along the road from Willaston to Shavington Academy.
Cllr Gage said he had tried several times to get the road looked at.
“Can I ask the chairman of highways if this flooding can be investigated with a thorough explanation of the issue given, with the intended resolution as well put in writing?” he asked.
“And can I also ask the chair of highways if he will commit to conducting a speed assessment review on Eastern Road with the view to a safer limit being imposed.”
Wilmslow councillor Mark Goldsmith (Ind), who chairs the highways and transport committee, said the council had returned 5,000 gullies to working order in the past year and was putting more money into the maintenance programme.
He told Cllr Gage: “We will look at this one.”
