school of rock teenagers visit Justin Hawkins talk

Youngsters at Nantwich Youth Community Centre School of Rock enjoyed their first ever rock outing when they attended “Justin Hawkins Rides Again” in Crewe.

Hawkins was on full display as the frontman of the revered rock band The Darkness took to the stage, much to the excitement of youngsters like musician Olivia, aged 15.

“I’ve grown up with The Darkness – my dad used to be a fan,” said Olivia.

“His music has always been there to inspire me.”

Olivia is a member of NYCC School of Rock and studies GCSE Music at Malbank School in Nantwich.

Following the successful series of one man shows Hawkins embarked on in 2024, he returned in early 2026 with a new solo venture for his adoring fans.

Fourteen-year-old musician Beau, who attends the Wednesday School of Rock and is also a student at Brine Leas School in Nantwich, said: “This was a great evening.

“Justin offered song-writing advice that could be used by beginners and more advanced musicians alike.

“He gave great demonstrations of how to be a performer and how to write music in general. He was brilliant.”

During the show, Hawkes broke down some of the most popular and unusual songs, explaining why something becomes a hit or not.

He posed important questions relating to music and culture and, with the audience’s help, hoped to bring about world peace by the end of the night.

Fourteen-year-old Leon, a student at Malbank School, said: “This was my first gig and I really enjoyed it.

“I hope that NYCC School of Rock puts on more outreach activities so that we can go to more gigs like this. I had a great time.”

Town councillor and NYCC trustee Anna Burton added: “We are here to support young people and help them achieve their potential by providing opportunities like this.

“The gig was funny and educational, and I could really feel that world peace was on its way.

“A big shout out to Caroline Jones, the School of Rock coordinator, for organising this brilliant outreach event.”

School of Rock is held every Wednesday at NYCC from 7.15–9pm and is open to new and aspiring musicians.
