Three young Jabbin Dabber boxers from Nantwich did their club proud with bouts at a recent show.
Gregory Haelis, Joseph Woodward and Henry Stokes all took part at Whitby Club in Ellesmere Port in the club’s home event.
Twelve-year-old Gregory (42kg) faced a familiar opponent in Smicka Loveridge (41kg) in a skills contest.
Both youngsters began cautiously, each wary of the other’s strengths, and the bout was fought in lively bursts, with both boxers working in sharp flurries.
Haelis, operating from his southpaw stance, controlled the movement around the ring well, making it difficult for Loveridge to settle and set his feet.
It was a competitive and well-matched opener that set the tone for the evening.
Joseph, 14, (52kg) stepped through the ropes to face Wirral CP’s Shay Bateman (53kg).
Bateman edged the early exchanges, starting the sharper of the two in the opening round, though Woodward finished the session strongly.
Taking clear instruction from his corner, Woodward emerged for the second round a different boxer — using intelligent footwork to create angles and landing clean, confident shots.
The third round followed a similar pattern, with Woodward boxing smartly and assertively.
And in the final bout for Nantwich was 14-year-old Henry (56kg), making his debut against Issac Purcell (56kg).
It was no easy introduction to competitive boxing, with Stokes facing a tricky southpaw who switched stances throughout in an effort to unsettle him.
Purcell’s experience showed, but Stokes remained composed, listening to his corner and putting into practice the hard work he has been developing in the gym.
Jabbin Dabber head coach Simon Jones praised his team’s efforts, adding: “All three boxers conducted themselves with the professionalism that comes with being an amateur boxer.
“I’d like to thank all the coaching staff at Wirral CP for hosting a great night of boxing.”
Jabbin Dabber will next be in action on home soil at Nantwich Town Football Club on March 13th for the club’s own show.
Tickets are available from the club, with further details on the club’s Facebook page.
