Ali Chughtai hit a sparkling century in Nantwich CC first team’s opening game of the season at Whitehouse Lane but it did not stop the hosts falling to a narrow defeat.
The Dabbers opener hit four sixes in an 83-ball 107 against Alderley Edge, but it proved in vain as the away side prevailed by 16 runs after setting Nantwich a massive target.
Phil Stockton took 5-79 from his 10 overs but the visitors’ decision to bat first after winning the toss looked a good one as they amassed 320-9 from their 50 overs.
But Chughtai led an unlikely run chase for Nantwich and contributions from Spencer Byatt (51), Oliver Griffiths (33) and Ray Doyle (48) kept the home team in with a chance until the final overs.
In the end, Nantwich were bowled out for 304.
There was a more emphatic defeat for the second team at Upton, where skipper Alan Chesters was the pick of the visiting bowlers, taking 4-9 as the hosts were dismissed for 195.
But in the Nantwich reply, only Philip Marsh (44) and Oliver Howell (27) got into gear and the Dabbers were dismissed for 124.
To complete a disappointing Saturday, the third team were beaten by four wickets by Wedgwood seconds.
Put into bat, Nantwich made 160-5, with skipper Robert Howell unbeaten on 49, and Wedgwood reached their target with four wickets and seven balls to spare.
The Sunday thirds had a better day, though, clocking up their second T20 Cup win of the season at Whitehouse Lane.
Grappenhall won the toss and chose to bat, making 105-8 from their 20 overs.
That proved a comfortable target for the Dabbers, Jackson Bentley (34) and Jakob Jordan (41) sharing an opening partnership of 72 to set the platform for an eight-wicket win inside 10 overs.
This Saturday (May 2nd), the seconds are in action against Widnes at Whitehouse Lane. The game starts at midday and all spectators are welcome. The bar will be open all day.
The first team travel to promoted Bramhall for their Premier League fixture.
