Second-half - first Dabbers goal - Ollie Pope finishes well (1)

Nantwich Town beat Cheshire rivals Northwich Victoria 3-0 in a pre-season match at the Swansway Stadium.

Goals from Ollie Pope, Mason McKay and Fenton Green help Dabbers to a comfortable win in hot weather.

The Dabbers trialist goalkeeper was called into action early on with a good save to tip over a flying header.

Moments later, it was the Vics keeper who did very well to keep out an effort from the speedy Liam Fitzpatrick who’d burst through on goal.

An outfield Dabbers trialist came closer still when he hit the crossbar with a well-struck free kick.

There were then a pair of chances for Ethan Hartshorn. The midfielder saw one well-saved and another that he wasn’t able to steer on target.

The Trickies’ clearest opportunity came early in the second half, but was sliced wide from the edge of the six yard box.

Ollie Pope fired over the bar but it was midfield that was a little more of a concern, as the Dabbers conceded possession too easily.

One of those led to a sharp breakaway that Northwich made a mess of when a goal might have been on the cards.

But it was actually during this spell that Nantwich took the lead.

Vics gave the ball away and Nantwich broke with Byron Moore found Callum Saunders down the left.

Saunders sent a terrific low pass into the path of Pope, who finished smartly to get his first goal since returning to the club.

A double chance went begging for Nantwich to make it two, but on 88 minutes the second did arrive.

Saunders was involved again, heading towards goal from a great cross from the left that brought a superb save from the Northwich keeper, only for Mason McKay to tap in the rebound.

McKay almost got himself a spectacular second with a rasping left-footed effort that hit the underside of the bar.

There was still time for a third as Iwan Roberts ran towards the byline and rolled it across to Fenton Green to score from close range.

The next game for the Dabbers is at home to FC St Helens on Tuesday 21st July at 7.45pm.
