Fire crews from across Cheshire have been battling a large wildfire on open land near Bickerton.

It’s believed the fire started at around 5pm yesterday (July 15th) on land off Harthill Lane.

Appliances from Nantwich, Malpas and Chester were initially called to the scene plus the all terrain wildfire unit from Macclesfield and a rapid response unit from Nantwich.

They also deployed the drone unit and water bowser, and support was provided by a fire engine from Whitchurch and relief crews from Northwich, Knutsford, Bollington, Penketh, Winsford and Alsager.

The blazed covered an area of around 4,800 square metres in a field.

Specialist firefighting equipment was used to tackle the blaze and the area has been divided into sectors to manage the incident.

Nearby residents were advised to close windows and doors as smoke billowed across the area.

Crews continued to fight the fire through the night.

At around 8am today, Cheshire Fire Service said: “Attendance was scaled back to three fire engines overnight and firefighters have made continued progress in damping down the fire using a hose reel water jet and main jet.

“From 8.30am, two fire engines take over to continue operations this morning.”

Cheshire Fire has not stated what caused the blaze to start.
