The Wellington Road sewer scheme in Nantwich has been delayed because engineers found an old sewer not on their records.
United Utilities had hoped the busy route would re-open on September 10 after an eight-week closure for major drainage works.
But, as Nantwichnews revealed yesterday (August 28), Cheshire East Highways tweeted that the completion date had been put back to September 30.
Now, United Utilities say the road should be open by September 23.
But work on Brookfield Park will continue into the Autumn.
Luke Spencer, project coordinator for United Utilities, told Nantwichnews: “We’re close to finishing this important work which will see the worry of flooding removed from dozens of families on Wellington Road, but just need a few extra days to tie up loose ends.
“When our team was digging under the road surface it came across a number of issues which meant we had to slightly amend our scheme and this has consequently increased the time we need to be on site.
“Also, Cheshire East Council wants its contractors to come in straight afterwards to resurface the road, rather than wait and do it at a later date.
“Residents in and around Wellington Road have been brilliant with us and we would like to thank them for their patience.”
The road has been shut between Station Road and Parkfield Drive since July to allow the flood alleviation work to take place.
Traffic has been diverted throughout school summer holidays via Peter de Stapleigh Way, Elwood Way and London Road.
The sewer works also run across large parts of Brookfield Park, allotments and down to Shrewbridge Road.
Workers have fenced off the park and an access road has been built, and heavy equipment stored on site.

You want to like on london road! Its like a motorway!!can’t believe there is another 2 weeks of this constant traffic & noise
Come on James speeding on Shrewbridge Road with all the speed bumps and the parked cars.
Saying that its NOT the posted diversion sooner its all finished the better for everyone.
My concern is the resurfacing of Wellington Road. To do it immediately will not give it time to settle with the heavy traffic it has to take and in a few months will be full of pot hole repairs due to sinking.
Believe me Paul the speeding is a real problem, most cars barely notice the speed bumps, I understand it’s temporary but the constent droning sound of traffic is annoying. I guess it’s just residents of Shrewbridge Road that would understand. Let’s just hope it gets completed on the date they say. I hope the resurfacing gets done properly too 🙂
I would be interested to know what penalty clauses were put in place before this work started. I’m sure if it was substantial, perhaps with a bonus for finishing early, the work would have been completed before the agreed deadline.
James………Would you rather have 8 weeks of moderate disruption OR keep the risk of flooding of your home? … Just so Shrewbridge Road is free of traffic? Think that’s a ‘no brainer’. No one owns Shrewbridge Road and we all pay car tax to use it when crucial sewers need replacing on the main route!!
Nantwich Resident…..I’d prefer people didn’t use the street as a short cut when the diversion signs clearly state local access only, not to RACE through for a quick short cut, that is the issue not the sewer work!!!
I think it’s an absolute Joke all the traffic is now coming through our Street Shrewbridge Road, this has become a complete nightmare for residents as the noise is non stop. Constent traffic 24/7 and speeding. Shrewbridge Road should just be for residents and not used as a short cut, totally annoying!
Welcome to my world James, been down Queens Drive lately? Hammered with traffic all day from 6-15a.m. until late into the evening approaching midnight, plus lots of these motorists are speeding and using mobiles…the police have been informed but up to now no sign of them curbing this practise.. Then we have Cheshire East. Approving the build of 270 homes at the top of the road which will impact even further with increased traffic noise. At least you have the end in sight…this is permanent!
As a resident of Shrewbridge Road, the noise is a nuisance but it is only temporary. The biggest problem is the recklessness of the drivers that are using Shrewbridge Road as a diversion. Drivers are being impatient and not willing to wait until the road is clear, this has resulted in drivers mounting the pavement and driving along it. Several times pedestrians have had to move out of the way because of cars and lorries driving on the pavement.
Shrewbridge Road is a narrow residential road with speed bumps and is not designed for large lorries, coaches or large amounts of traffic. For safety’s sake there should better diversion signs directing traffic to the official diversion.
