Cheshire East councillors have approved a 4.99% hike in council tax as part of a budget aiming to “put council finances on a sustainable footing in the long term”.
But it was a close vote with the budget being voted through by only 40 to 38, with three councillors abstaining at full council yesterday (Feb 25th).
Cash-strapped Cheshire East Council has been granted exceptional financial support from the government for the third year so it can balance its books, writes Belinda Ryan.
The authority was informed yesterday its request for £35 million for the next financial year has been agreed in principle.

Cash-strapped Cheshire East Council will need about £28 million of exceptional financial support from the government to balance its books for 2026/27.
And that’s as well as the millions to be generated from raising council tax by the maximum 4.99% from April.

Cash-strapped Cheshire East Council is asking the government for exceptional financial support for 2025/26.
In February, the council applied for exceptional financial support (EFS) in the form of a capitalisation direction for up to £17.6m for this financial year, although it has not yet drawn down on that.
