Visitors enjoy their train ride - Peacock Railway

Visitors are invited to enjoy a day of trains, transport and traditional summer fun when the annual ‘Transport Day’ returns to the Peacock Railway in Nantwich.

The popular event is the biggest date in the calendar for the volunteer-run miniature railway in Willaston, and will be held on Sunday 19th July from 11am to 5pm.

It will be a full day of attractions for families, railway enthusiasts and anyone looking for a day out, with free entry and free parking.

Operated by the South Cheshire Model Engineering Society, the Peacock Railway is behind The Peacock Inn on Crewe Road, Willaston.

Visitors can enjoy rides on the railway’s 5-inch gauge steam and battery-electric trains, which travel around a scenic track stretching for almost a quarter of a mile.

Rides cost just £1 per person (cash or card) and include two laps behind a selection of miniature locomotives.

Visitors can also explore the society’s raised gauge 1 railway, believed to be the longest of its kind in the North West, where detailed 45mm scale model trains will be running throughout the day.

The clubhouse will be open, giving visitors the chance to see displays of model engineering, steam engines and locomotives while learning more about the craftsmanship behind the society’s work.

There will also be a display of classic vehicles and traction engines.

Hot food will be available from the Venture Scout Group and an ice cream van and homemade cakes served by society members.

There is plenty of outdoor seating around the site, providing an ideal spot to relax and watch the trains and attractions throughout the day.

A South Cheshire Model Engineering Society spokesperson said: “Transport Day is always the highlight of our calendar and a wonderful opportunity to welcome visitors to our railway.

“Whether you’re bringing the family, have a passion for engineering and railways, or simply fancy a different day out, we’d love to see you.

“Our volunteers put a huge amount of time into maintaining and operating the railway, and Transport Day is a great chance to showcase what we’ve created while raising awareness of the Society.”

The South Cheshire Model Engineering Society was founded in 1968.

After its original railway site was lost during the construction of the Nantwich bypass, members relocated to the current site behind The Peacock Inn in 1991.

Since then, volunteers have transformed the former rough ground into today’s landscaped railway, complete with nearly a quarter of a mile of raised track and automatic signalling.
