A South Cheshire College student  is putting the final preparations in place for the fight of his life at a Nantwich nightclub.

Father-of-two Phil Jones is hoping to pack a punch when he steps into the ring for the charity stunt at Gregory’s in Nantwich on March 31.

The 32-year-old, who plays American football for Crewe Railroaders, has never tried boxing before.

But he decided to swap his American football gear for his boxing gloves  at the event to raise cash for Sands – the stillborn and neonatal death charity.

He has completed 88 training sessions and has shed two stone in weight as he gets in shape for the event.

Funkin Fitness is organising the White Collar Boxing Event, which will feature up to 15 fights on the night.

Phil will be stepping into the ring for three two-minute rounds during the evening.

Phil, studying Enterprise Computing, has set up a fundraising webpage – www.justgiving.com/Phillip-Jones3 – and a text donation service, text FOKA79 to 70070 to donate £1.

Phil, of Crewe, said: “I’ve never done anything like this before but I heard about the boxing event through Fitness First and thought I would give it a go.

“American Football is my sport and I’ve never been in a boxing ring before but it’s all for a very worthy cause.

“I’ve already raised over £500 but I want to raise lots more cash before the night.

“I think Sands is almost a bit of a forgotten charity which deserves a lot more recognition. As a father myself, I want to try and help people who are left devastated by the loss of a child.

“I’d be very grateful if people would dig deep and support me.”

Tickets for the boxing night are £20, available from Steve at Funkin Fitness on 07766 644222 or e-mail [email protected]
