Blyth FA Cup - Nantwich Town's Weaver Stadium, pre-season games, community football

Furious Nantwich Town fans are calling for an Evo-Stik Premier League inquiry into a match official’s decision to postpone their Boxing Day game against Ashton United.

A local official had passed the Weaver Stadium pitch as fit to play earlier in the day.

But the late replacement referee called the game off just over an hour before kick off.

As well hundreds of disappointed fans, Nantwich Town faces a bill towards the opposition’s travel costs.

The club said in a statement: “This is obviously extremely disappointing, especially coming so late in the day, when people are en route and as we passed a pitch inspection at 9am and made the announcement the game would be going ahead.

“We apologise to all supporters from both sides and the directors, management and players from Ashton United for the inconvenience.

“We have done all we could within our power to ensure the game could go ahead, but ultimately we are beholden to the match referees’s decision.”

One Nantwich fan said: “The referee’s decision to call the match off was an absolute disgrace.

“I had a walk on the pitch and it was in excellent condition, apart from a small area in front of the dug out which sand and forking would have sorted. It was as good as any pitch you would have seen today.

“Both teams wanted to play, the only ones who didn’t fancy it were the officials.

“The ref’s decision has cost the clubs hundreds, if not thousands of pounds in expenses and lost revenue, which we can ill afford.”

Another supporter added: “The club should appeal to the league and if supported by Ashton, the FA. It’s not right we have to pay expenses for a game that should by all accounts of been played.”

Nantwichnews has contacted Evo-Stik Premier League officials and is awaiting a  response.
