Jon Gold, Chairman of Nantwich Town FC

Nantwich Town have reduced prices and are letting kids in free for tomorrow’s home clash with Marine – providing the game goes ahead.

It comes after the club had to apologise for the Boxing Day match postponement which left many fans angry.

A local official had passed the pitch fit to play in the morning, but the match referee called it off just over an hour before kick-off.

Club chairman Jon Gold told Nantwichnews the decision was probably the right one.

“Obviously it’s always frustrating when a game is called off, especially so late in the day when preparations are well in place and supporters, players and officials are either already at the stadium or on the way, as it affects so many people.

“The adverse weather conditions of recent weeks have been affecting all manner of events.

“The club had worked really hard to prepare the pitch and to afford us every opportunity of staging the game.

“However the match referee, after observing the weather forecast and with rain starting to fall, declared the pitch unplayable.

“In hindsight and seeing the rain that fell later in the afternoon it appears the referee may have called it right.”

The decision will cost the club revenue at the gate as Boxing Day fixtures traditionally attract one of the biggest crowds of the season.

“There are obviously financial implications having now not played a home game in nearly a month,” added Mr Gold.

“But we are fortunate the club is managed prudently and on a sound footing and although it makes things difficult, we try and budget for every eventuality and disruptions such as this.

“I share the frustrations of players and supporters, but unfortunately we are in the hands of the match referee and there is nothing we can do, except offer our apologies to all concerned.”

With more rain today (December 28), there will once again be a question mark over tomorrow’s clash against promotion-chasing Marine.

Nantwich is offering reduced admission for this game (bring a mate and double the gate) and all kids will be free. For details visit www.nantwichtownfc.co.uk
