A new Cubs and Beavers group has been launched in Nantwich to cope with soaring demand for the popular movement.

The 7th SWC Nantwich Millfields Beavers and Cubs colony has just opened its doors to more than 25 children.

Parents of pupils at Millfields Primary School, where the group is based, have volunteered to run it.

They launched the new colony as many youngsters were facing massive waiting lists for existing local groups in Nantwich and Stapeley.

They say around 70 to 80 children remain on their combined waiting lists.

South West Cheshire District Commissioner Ian Sowerby approached Millfields as a suitable venue in a prime location.

He said: “It is a great credit to the parents of Millfields Primary School who have volunteered to be leaders and helpers so that children can enjoy the Scouting experience and learn new life skills whilst enjoying themselves.”

Scouting aims to contribute to the development of young people in achieving physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials.

It also aims to help youngsters become responsible citizens and members of their local, national and international community.

Mr Sowerby added: “The Beavers and Cubs are all making new friends and gaining confidence from working as individuals and as a team in both games and activities.

“The leaders and helpers who support both sections, always have a smile on their faces and appreciate they are giving the youngsters a firm foot hold in their development and being an integral part of the of the community.”

Beaver leader Cheryl Hamlyn: “For many of us this is the first time we have been involved in the Scouting organisation and so far it has been an absolute joy.

“We have an amazing group of young children and have fun at every session.

“Of course the added bonus is by becoming leaders we have ensured places for our own children!”
