Susie Wolff racing driver at Crewe UTC

British racing driver Susie Wolff will be visiting Crewe Engineering and Design University Technical College for an open evening.

Wolff is an acclaimed British racing driver and the only female to drive on a Formula One weekend in the last two decades.

She will be at Crewe UTC on March 16 to share her experiences about her career.

She is launching a new initiative that inspires, connects and celebrates women in perceived male-dominated industries, including engineering.

Wolff, founder of Dare To Be Different, said: “I’m delighted to be asked to the University Technical College.

“Engineering is a gateway to many careers, with motorsport being one of them.

“I feel privileged to have worked closely with some of the top engineers in the motorsport industry throughout my career. Their knowledge and expertise helped me turn my passion into my profession.”

David Terry, Principal of Crewe Engineering and Design UTC, said: “Susie is an inspirational figure that all students can look up to.

“She has embarked on a fascinated career at the forefront of motorsport, one of the most exciting sports in the world.

“And this started from an early interest in engineering.

“This is exactly the kind of path our students can take, following their interest in engineering and design to become the next generation of engineers, innovators, designers, scientists and maybe even racing drivers.”

The open evening on Wednesday March 16 at the Cheshire Campus of Manchester Metropolitan University, starts at 5.30pm.

Students, parents, the local community and businesses can find out more about educational paths offered, learn about the application process, the school itself, and engage with various business partners.

The £10.6 million Crewe Engineering and Design UTC, based at the former Victoria Centre site on West Street, will open in September 2016.

Applications for September admissions are currently open.

Its academic partners include Bentley Motors, OSL Rail, Manchester Metropolitan University, Siemens, Bosch, Chevron Racing, James Walker, Optical 3D and Unipart Logistics.
