Nemi Dairy Milk

Nemi Dairy near Nantwich has achieved success by exporting fresh British milk to the Middle East.

The family-run business, based in Audlem, now has its products on the shelves of six hypermarkets.

The firm was approached by Y International – the UK export arm of Lulu Group International which owns a chain of hypermarkets throughout the Middle East.

The process of shipping fresh milk to the Middle East starts at the dairy where the milk is pasteurised.

It is then transported in chilled vehicles to a temperature-controlled warehouse in Birmingham.

Each bottle is re-packaged with an Arabic label and palletised using special insulating material.

It arrives at the airport on chilled vehicles and is air-freighted directly to the region’s
central warehouse.

Throughout its journey, the milk is temperature checked constantly and never goes above 5C.

Within days it is on the shelves ready for consumers to buy.

Andrew Henderson, managing director of Nemi, said: “It is incredible to think our farmers are milking their cows and then days later that milk is on the shelves in the Middle East.

“We are delighted to work with Y International and Lulu Group – they are showing a tremendous amount of support to us and our industry and we hope this will transpire into a long-standing relationship.”

Lulu Hypermarket chain is the largest of its kind in the Middle East.

It operates 134 stores and 14 malls throughout UAE, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, India and more recently Malaysia, with more projects in the pipeline.

Adnan Ahmed, a senior buyer, said: “It is great to work with a company that is so passionate about their products.

“So far, we have received good feedback from our store managers over in Qatar and we will be running in-store tastings over the coming few weeks.

“At Y International, we specialise in exporting and managing the chill-chain and it is great when we can champion small British producers like Nemi Dairy.”

Yaaseen Khalfey, perishables buyer, added: “It is always best to work collaboratively with our suppliers and between ourselves and Nemi we have a great story to tell.

“We are working closely together to spread this message and, in more general terms, as advocates of British products overseas.”

Earlier this year, Y International UK won the Queen’s Enterprise Award – a Royal Seal of approval which recognises the company’s outstanding achievements in promoting international trade.
