South Cheshire venue Axis Arts Centre has kicked off a new season of theatre, poetry and dance.

The venue, which has an uncertain future with the impending closure of Crewe’s MMU campus, will be opening to the public once more.

Its 2017 Autumn Season includes performances, exhibitions and writer events both on and off campus.

The season begins with three distinctly different evenings – drama, performance poetry and dance.

“Imitating the dog”, one of the UK’s most original and innovative theatre companies, brings their latest show “Nocturnes” to Crewe on October 5.

The show enjoyed its premiere at Edinburgh Fringe in August, where it was selected to be part of the British Council showcase.

It is said to be ambitious and visually exciting – a multi-media twist on a 1950s spy thriller set at the height of the Cold War.

Performed on what appears to be a film soundstage, two actors voice a film they can’t see and never acknowledge.

On October 10, there’s an evening of dance when leading contemporary dancer Charlie Morrissey (Siobhan Davies, Sadlers Wells) combines with dance improvisation created specifically for Axis by Paula Hampson.

Morrissey performs two dances from his repertoire and Paula’s piece has emerged from work she has been developing with Bluecoat in Liverpool.

Both performers have more than 30 years each in their profession.

This is followed swiftly by The Axis Poetry Slam on October 11.

A selection of poets will bring their best rhymes to the stage, in a battle to be crowned Axis Slam Champ, win cash prizes and be given the chance to feature at other prestigious Slams around the country.
