Hundreds of bus passengers across Crewe and Nantwich have been hit by the first of three planned industrial action days by Arriva North West drivers.

All Arriva North West services running in Crewe and Nantwich were cancelled today as part of the first 24-hour strike.

More than 2,000 of the company’s drivers and engineering staff are taking industrial action in protest over pay offers.

Members of the Unite and GMB unions are involved in the 24-hour strike which began at 3.30am and will continue until Friday.

Two more days of walkouts are scheduled for October 23 and 30.

Arriva says its pay offer was fair, but talks have broken down over the latest pay rise offer of 31p per hour which was rejected by unions.

The only bus services operating in Cheshire were those coming in and out Chester from Wrexham and Rhyl.

An Arriva North West spokesperson said: “This action affects bus services operated by Arriva in the North West only, Arriva Buses Wales services running throughout North Wales and parts of Cheshire will be running as normal.

“Arriva North West want to wholeheartedly apologise to our customers who will be affected by this industrial action.”
