Draw at Gainsborough - Joe Malkin - Player of December, Nantwich Town

Nantwich Town prepared for their Cheshire Senior Cup clash with Crewe Alexandra with a hard-earned draw away at Gainsborough.

The Dabbers were held to a 0-0 stalemate at sixth-place Gainsborough to maintain a one-point lead at the top of Evo-Stik Premier League.

Dave Cooke’s side survived plenty of pressure in the first half and were grateful for some last ditch clearances and good saves by Will Jaskerlainen.

Nantwich showed improvement after the break, with Matt Bell, Sean Cooke and Joe Mwasile posing a threat on the hosts’ goal.

Now the Dabbers can turn their attention to the Cheshire Cup First Round clash with League Two neighbours Crewe this Wednesday, January 9.

It takes place at the Alexandra Stadium, kick-off 7.45pm.

Tickets are £5 adults and £1 concessions on a pay-on-the-gate basis only.

The Alex made it through the preliminary round by thumping Cheadle Town 6-0 in October and now face last year’s competition winners in the first round proper.

The Dabbers beat Stockport Town in last year’s final and received a bye in the preliminary round this year.

Crewe beat Nantwich in the 2017 final with Callum Saunders scoring for the Railwaymen in a 3-2 victory.

Saunders now plays for Nantwich and will be looking to make a mark against his former team-mates.

Meanwhile, Joe Malkin has been named Bowland Brewery Player of December for Nantwich Town, pictured above.
