Rob Richardson on his electronic drum kit for Brassfestuk - videos

A talented Wistaston drummer has appeared in two high-profile online videos during UK lockdown, writes Jonathan White.

Rob Richardson is a member of Cheshire Drums and Bugles, the Royal Welsh Regiment Corps of Drums Association, principal percussionist with Crewe Brass and a Primary School Supply Teacher.

During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, he has used his drumming skills to contribute to two videos during July 2020, which have received thousands of views around the world.

Rob’s first appearance was in a Virtual Corps of Drums collaboration video for The Bands of HM Royal Marines, and

Drummers auditioned by submitting a video of themselves playing their side drum or Practice Pads.

Hundreds of videos were received from the USA, Canada, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, and the UK.

However, only a select few, including Rob, appeared in the final cut.

Rob’s second appearance was in a BrassFestUK Isolation Massed Band collaboration video for Brassfestuk, and

The band played the song “Fat Bottomed Girls” by British rock band Queen.

The video release coincided with the birthday of Queen member and songwriter Brian May and was dedicated to him by project organiser Rob Tompkins.

Lockdown music videos have proven to be a welcome distraction for many people who are missing the band room and playing with friends.

Rob said: “As pretty much all of my “family” have passed away, my friends in the regiment, the Corps and the Band ARE my family and both my dad and I have missed being in the bandroom, the barracks and the studio making music and seeing our Banding Family.

“Doing these videos and taking part has been so good for my own mental health apart from anything else.

“It was an honour to represent the Regiment & Cheshire Drums and Bugles in the Royal Marines Virtual Corps of Drums and well, to play alongside some of my friends from the No 1 Brass Band in the World, The Cory Band, on “Fat Bottomed Girls” was just pure, unadulterated fun!”
