Nantwich councillors have backed plans to help local boxing club Jabbin Dabber expand into more venues across the town.
The club, based on Welsh Row, is keen to use facilities like Nantwich Civic Hall and the Nantwich Youth Community Centre (NYCC) to stage boxing events and activities.
Cllr Joy O’Hara put forward a Notice of Motion supporting the club and calling on the council to back it with grant funding as well as use of community facilities.
She said: “The club provides a real lifeline for local youngsters including young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, providing training, focus and purpose for children in difficult circumstances.
“Providing them with support, be it a grant or council funding, would send a clear message of our commitment to support underprivileged sections of our youth community.
“Recognising the significant role that community sports clubs like Jabbin Dabber play in promoting physical activity, community engagement, and the wellbeing of local residents, I believe is in the best interest of our local community to facilitate the continued success of such initiatives.”
It’s hoped use of other community venues will open the club up to more young people, encourage activity and reduce anti-social behaviour.
Hosting bigger events could attract people from outside the area and boost the local economy, added Cllr O’Hara.
She added: “Jabbin Dabber is a not-for-profit organisation that relies solely on the training fees paid by its members.
“This only just covers the running costs of the club in its current venue.
“By backing the club with financial support and allowing it to use community spaces, it would allow them to invest in more equipment and widen its availability to the public and more diverse groups.”
Cllr John Priest said: “I fully support the use of the Civic Hall for this and we should all get behind it.”
Cllr Caroline Kirkham added: “The Civic Hall is a community space and we should support this via the grant system.”
Cllr Adrian Heald said: “There is great work being done by the team at Jabbin Dabber which should be going on all over the country, ensuring there are things for young people to get involved with.
“This is really important to give them more visibility and offer something more for youngsters in our town.”
Nantwich Town Council voted unanimously to support Cllr O’Hara’s motion.
