Police and school staff have thwarted attempts by pupils in Nantwich to stage “unofficial” boxing fights between three schools.

It emerged today that plans had been circulating on social media to stage the fights on Barony Park in Nantwich.

It appeared to involve pupils from Malbank, Brine Leas School and Shavington High School.

But in a message from Malbank headteacher John Harrison, the plans appear to have been stopped.

Mr Harrison said: “Following contact with the police, myself and the headteachers at Brine Leas and Shavington have been made aware of plans circulating on social media regarding an arranged series of unofficial boxing fights at The Barony at 4pm today.

“Working collaboratively, we have identified the individual who initiated and advertised the plan, and now he has been detained we are confident that this will significantly reduce the likelihood of the event taking place.

“All three schools have also made it clear to students this afternoon that they must not attend.

“However, the police have confirmed they will be present at the location and will take action if necessary.

“Any young person attending with the intention of engaging in this event will be moved on and may risk arrest.”
