Wistaston pensioner Bill Heath has been recognised for outstanding service to tennis and his club with the “Unsung Hero of the Year 2024” award from Cheshire Tennis.

The 80-year-old is a long-time volunteer at Wistaston Jubilee Tennis Club and has been involved since 2002.

He has taken on a range of roles over the years — committee member, Treasurer, membership secretary — and currently serves as club chairman since 2015.

Bill was nominated by club captain and coach George Raiswell, who praised his dedication, leadership, and tireless enthusiasm for the sport.

The award was presented by Clive Young from Cheshire Tennis during a special ceremony held at the club’s courts behind Wistaston Memorial Hall & Community Centre on Church Lane.

Bill said: “It’s a real honour to receive this award. I’ve always enjoyed being part of the club, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see it grow and thrive.

“Tennis brings people together, and I’m proud to be part of that.”

Cheshire Tennis, in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), works to promote and grow tennis across the county.

With more than 90 clubs, park courts, and an increasing number of padel courts, there are plenty of opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved in the sport — whether for fun or competition.

In 2021, Bill was named Wistonian of the Year for his contributions to village life.

Together with his wife Helen, he played a key role in Wistaston’s success at the 2023 RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finals, where the village scooped a Gold Award in the Town category.

He has also served as treasurer and booking officer of Wistaston Memorial Hall & Community Centre since 2018.
