HF Leighton Hospital planning consultation

A four-week non-statutory public consultation on plans to build the new Leighton Hospital has ended.

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust hosted three in-person events and a virtual session where residents were able to learn about plans and speak to the Healthier Futures programme team.

The trust says feedback received will be reviewed and included as part of an outline planning application for the new hospital and supporting infrastructure.

These will be submitted to Cheshire East Council in December, it says.

The application will include:
– Around 107,500sqm of new replacement hospital floorspace in the form of a six-storey hospital building (plus rooftop plant), alongside other buildings to accommodate the Central Sterile Services Department and new energy infrastructure.

– A new Ambulatory Cancer Care Centre (plus rooftop equipment) providing an additional 5,000sqm of floorspace.

– Retention, alteration and/or expansion of four existing hospital buildings to work alongside the new facilities.

– New vehicular access routes from both Middlewich Road and Flowers Lane, separating blue light and service vehicles from the main hospital access points.

– A new multi-storey car park comprising up to 1,000 spaces alongside new and/or reconfiguring of existing surface car parking for staff and patients.

The Trust will also submit a separate detailed application for new surface-level car parking to the south of the current site.

This includes a provision of 310 new car parking spaces, new vehicular and pedestrian access from Smithy Lane, landscaping, drainage infrastructure and associated works.

Russ Favager, the Trust’s board senior responsible officer for Leighton New Hospital Programme, said: “On behalf of the Trust, I am very grateful to everyone who attended the events and provided their valuable feedback.

“This is a shared journey, and we’ve always been committed to listening to our communities.

“This is why we will continue to engage with people on a variety of matters, including how staff and the public will want the new hospital to look and feel.

“Full details about future engagement sessions will be published on the Healthier Futures microsite.”

The proposed new Leighton will be one of the most digitally advanced hospitals in the UK.

If approved, it will be built on the land bought in 2024 to the north of the existing hospital site in Crewe.
