Nantwich Town councillors have agreed to end their lease on Brookfield Hall in Nantwich early to save funds.
The building, next to Brookfield Park off Shrewbridge Road, has been leased by Nantwich Town Council from Cheshire East for many years.
But the building is rarely used these days and town councillors have voted in favour to end the lease in March – a year early.
Council clerk Samantha Roberts said the maintenance requirements are minimal to prepare the building for being handed back.
“It’s general wear and tear and the only costs are labour costs from our team, all the work can be done by them,” she added.
Cllr Caroline Kirkham said: “We’re going to have to do the work anyway. The numbers using that building is dwindling, we’ve lost a lot of regular income for it.
“I would be in favour of ending our lease early on it.”
Cllr Arthur Moran said: “Once this lease comes to an end, Cheshire East will dispose of it, and the allotments.
“That land will be sold and developers could extend Tanners Way cul-de-sac for more housing.”
Ms Roberts also said she had looked into potential grant funding to continue with the lease and upgrade the building, which once hosted the town council meetings.
Eight town councillors voted to end the lease early, two councillors abstained.
Brookfield Hall will be handed back to Cheshire East Council in March 2026.

In all my years in Nantwich never once been in there, looks very run down and the plot will be useful for housing along with Brookfield park if possible as it’s rarely used
