Young pupils at Malbank School in Nantwich have adopted special furry friends to help with their learning!
The school adopted four female guinea pigs before Christmas that are being looked after in Sixth Form.
And the animals – named Elphaba, Glinda, Minnie, and Daisy as voted for by students – are proving a massive hit in providing pastoral support for students in years 7 to 11.
Pupils are paired with a member of the Welsh Row school’s Sixth Form, who mentor them through an AQA qualification on caring of a guinea pig.
The Sixth Form student then completes a peer mentoring qualification once they have successfully helped their young person to achieve their qualification.
Laura Kirk-Bradshaw, Key stage Learning Manager in Malbank Sixth Form, said: “The guinea pigs have proved to be very popular with all our students and are now part of our Malbank family!
“We recognise it is quite unusual for a high school to have small animals as pets, but we have seen a remarkable impact on our student body.
“They live in our school garden in the warmer months and in sixth form in my office with me during the winter.”
