cheshire east council leaders nick mannion, left, michael gorman

Dear Editor,
We’re informed that Cheshire East Council is conducting an internal investigation into the circumstances regarding how a letter of support for Adlington New Town was sent to the New Towns Task Force in the name of Cllrs Mannion (Labour) and Gorman (Independent), Leaders of our Council.

I also found out, like everyone else last week, that Crewe is no longer in the running for a New Town at and around Leighton.

This came as a particular surprise as I didn’t know it was in the running in the first place!

It was mentioned in passing at February Council when Cllrs Mannion and Gorman were squirming as they fought the No Confidence vote.

So, it appears there were two separate attempts at building a New Town in our borough, neither of which was brought to any committee for overview or scrutiny.

Both Leaders tell us they are truly sorry, for their lack of leadership and loss of oversight of this hugely important matter.

Both leaders want to establish which officer they can throw under a bus to bring this matter to a conclusion and exonerate their position.

However, both leaders have overseen the progression of massively impactful projects without executive authority. Both are now claiming there was someone else to blame.

Shame on them. Take responsibility for your actions. The letter was signed by you. The details were known by you. The democratic process of our Constitution was ignored by you.

Throwing someone else under the bus is not the response I expect or respect.

Yours,

Cllr Liz Wardlaw
Odd Rode Ward
Cheshire East Council
