Nantwich Youth and Community Centre volunteers teamed up to support a community outdoor spring clean.

They decided to spruce up the outdoor areas of the popular centre on Birchin Lane, which is used for football, basketball and netball.

The outdoor court was renovated a year thanks to local resident Katie Smith, a former youth club member, who helped secure funding and support from local packing firm Unette.

Now Joe Morrison, social media lead at the centre, has pulled together seven volunteers who armed themselves with brushes, spades and gardening gear to help clear moss and weeds.

Among them were NYCC youth members Scarlet and Oscar, who regularly attend the club.

Other volunteers included Mary from Nantwich Buddies and Sue from Sustainable Nantwich.

The community‑spirited clean‑up took just an hour and a half but made a huge difference to the outdoor space.

Cllr Anna Burton, NYCC trustee, said: “Running Nantwich Youth and Community Centre is an ongoing job.

“Thanks to National Lottery funding we have secured annual funding for youth workers, but day‑to‑day maintenance is largely carried out by volunteers.

“We want to keep this space looking good for the youth people, especially after local packing firm Unette were so generous painting the lines and buying the nets.

“This is a great example of the community stepping up to help.

“I was so pleased to welcome Sustainable Nantwich and Nantwich Buddies, two fantastic organisations, and I was particularly delighted to see young people giving up their time to help look after their centre.

“We had three big bags of debris at the end. Great work.”

NYCC reopened nearly two years ago and has gone from strength to strength thanks to the support of many local organisations and funding from the National Lottery.

The centre now welcomes hundreds of young people each week, offering a wide range of activities through its junior and senior youth clubs, including the School of Rock project and Dungeons & Dragons for older members.

The building is also home to Scouts and home education groups who regularly run activities on site.
