Stephen Welch at site of Weaver hydromill

A new hydromill on the River Weaver in Nantwich could power around 30 homes and is set to provide free energy to the town’s leisure centre.

Proposals have been submitted by Nantwich Mill Community Energy company to build the small hydromill.

It will consist of a basic “Archimedes Screw” design and work like a giant corkscrew where river water falls through the channel at Mill Race – site of the original mill which was demolished in the 1970s.

It will use the tried and tested technology of a long Archimedes Screw with water flowing down it and generates electricity.

Nick Hutt is one of the brains behind the scheme which has been in the making for more than a decade.

Now the plans have been submitted to Cheshire East Council, and Nick confirmed exactly what it could provide.

He said: “There are a host of other projects already up and running across the UK – demonstrating that small scale local hydro generation is not just viable and practical, but a vital part of the nation’s future energy mix.

“The actual building will be made to look attractive, finished in wood cladding or other material deemed suitable.

“The generator will produce 25-30 ‘houses worth’ of power.

“All the members of the Nantwich Mill Community Energy are volunteers.

“We received a grant from the Northwest Community Energy Fund to engage professionals to develop the design of the mill and analysis and preparation of a business case.

“We have also received on going and effective support and help from Councillor Anna Burton and Connor Naismith MP.”

Nick added: “The idea is that the power will go to the leisure centre, so it will be an excellent customer.

“We’ve been in discussion with them and they are keen to receive it, but nothing confirmed yet in terms of a contract, just an in principle agreement.”

Power created by the hydromill will flow through a wire around an inch diameter along the bank of the river up to Welsh Row, and from there to the leisure centre.

Local residents will also have a chance to buy shares in the energy project, with the aim of raising around £350,000 to ensure the project is sustainable.

Nick said investors could earn a 4% return on investment.

He added: “There will be a shares issue for local people, and every shareholder will get one vote. We would expect an initial 4% return on investment, and we aim to raise £350,000.

“There are very similar schemes already operating, including in Congleton, and we are in contact with them.”

Nick also confirmed they are considering a second hydromill further down the river close to the Beam Bridge weir, with Reaseheath College a potential customer.

“That is actually a better site in terms of how much power we could generate,” he added.

“It’s a great story – the environment wins, the community wins. What’s not to like!”

Crewe & Nantwich MP Connor Naismith has backed the project.

He said: “At a time when there is an increasing emphasis on sustainability and community participation regarding energy, I believe this proposal shows a constructive and positive initiative worthy of support.”
