A resident at a care village in Nantwich has discovered that the daughter of the surgeon who saved his life more than 70 years ago now works at the same place.
It was a chance conversation between Richmond Villages resident Ted Thomas that uncovered the extraordinary family connection.
Ted, now aged 91, was just 23-years-old when he was involved in a serious scooter accident and needed complex reconstructive facial surgery.
The life-saving operation was carried out by renowned surgeon Mr Hargrove, whose expertise and experience treating soldiers’ injuries during the Second World War helped Ted make a full recovery.
More than seven decades later, Ted was in the Nantwich home and began chatting domiciliary care team member Emma West when he mentioned he had spent time in hospital next to the flower showground as a young man following a serious scooter accident.
He recalled being treated by a surgeon named Mr Hargrove – who was Emma’s father!
The pair were both delighted and emotional when they made the discovery and began to share memories of Shropshire, where Emma grew up and where Ted spent much of his adult life.
Emma, 55, who has worked at Richmond Villages for two years, said: “My father retired from surgery when I was very young, so although I knew he was a respected consultant, I had never fully understood the impact he had made on individual lives.
“I couldn’t quite believe the connection, and it was wonderful to meet Ted and see first-hand the difference my dad has made to his life.”
Ted added: “That operation saved my life and gave me the opportunity to build the career and life I’ve had.
“Meeting Emma and discovering this connection has been extraordinary.
“Since losing my wife Margaret, the friendships I’ve built at Richmond Villages Nantwich, particularly with Emma, have been invaluable to me.”
Despite the decades between them, the pair found common ground in the people, places and stories they both knew from the Shropshire area where they grew up.
After Ted’s recovery, he went on to enjoy a long career in the fire service, climbed mountains and dedicated his working life to helping others.
