As a teenager I didn’t find Shakespeare easy.
I found learning about the Elizabethan bard in a classroom in Crewe quite difficult, and it wasn’t until watching a performance from my peers that I started to embrace this strange sounding poetry and learn to love the language.
That enthusiasm for Shakespeare was reignited this week after watching a performance of The Tempest by The Nantwich Players.
Directed by Garth Jones, The Tempest is a story of a shipwreck on a remote island, with themes of magic, revenge and ultimately forgiveness.
The Players have done a remarkable job with this production.
Janan Chopra was wonderful and delivered a remarkable performance as Prospero as did Elle Gardiner who played Miranda.
I enjoyed watching Vanessa Carter dance and jump around the stage as Ariel, and laughed at John Mackay as a drunk Trinculo.
David Foyle gave a strong performance as Caliban, as did David Bryan as Alonso. An outstanding cast who worked well together.

Credit must also be given to the costume and set designers. I thought the costume for Caliban was particularly effective and the projection of imagery on the walls expands the space beautifully.
A wonderful production which I enjoyed watching,
The Tempest is showing at The Players Theatre until Saturday 5th July. Tickets are still available for some performances.
