Wreaths laid at Nantwich war memorial (1)

Nantwich will honour the town’s men and women who served and sacrificed in conflicts past and present at Remembrance Sunday this weekend, writes Jonathan White.

The Remembrance event will take place on Sunday beginning with a parade at 10:30am from Nantwich Civic Hall.

The parade – featuring Royal British Legion veterans, serving personnel, young cadets, and civic leaders – will make its way along Market Street, before turning into Churchyardside and continuing to the Town Square.

The Act of Remembrance service will begin at 11am at the War Memorial on the Town Square, led by Rev Dr Mark Hart, Rector of St Mary’s Church and Padre to the Nantwich & District Royal British Legion.

The service will include a two-minute silence, wreath-laying, and a performance by the Cheshire Constabulary Band.

Joe O’Leary, Chairman of Nantwich & District Royal British Legion, will give a short address before The Last Post is played and the town falls silent in reflection.

Readings will be given by John Dwyer, President of the Nantwich & District Royal British Legion, and Cllr Arthur Moran, Vice President of the branch.

The service will also include prayers and hymns.

Those attending can download a copy of the service sheet from the Nantwich Town Council website:

Across the UK, Remembrance Sunday is a day to honour the courage and sacrifice of all who have served in the armed forces and those who gave their lives for freedom.

It is observed on the second Sunday of November, closest to Armistice Day (11th November) – marking the end of the First World War in 1918.

The red poppy, inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields, remains a poignant symbol of remembrance and hope.
