Stone Roses legend Mani who was set to perform a live gig in Nantwich next year has died, it was announced today.

Applestump Records on Oatmarket had secured a pledge from iconic Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield to play in the town in October next year.

But his brother Greg today announced that the bassist has died at the age of 63.

The musician’s brother Greg announced his death “with the heaviest of hearts” in a post on Facebook.

Mounfield’s bass playing was an integral part of the Stone Roses’ “baggy” sound, and later reunited with his bandmates for their comeback tour in 2012.

Tributes have poured in today from music legends around the world, including from Oasis, The Smiths, Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen.

Steve Cook, owner of Applestump, had been looking forward to Mani lifting the lid on his life as bassist in seminal bands The Stone Roses and Primal Scream.

He said: “Such a sad day. An absolute icon who meant so much to so many. Myself included. The bands he played in transcended generations and his and their impact on music is immeasurable. Such a loss.

“We are in active conversation with the event agency and will be contacting all ticket holders individually via email in the next couple of days with alternative options and refund details.”

The Stone Roses remain one of the most iconic bands of the past 35 years.

Paving the way for Oasis, The Verve, and the whole Madchester movement, their self-titled debut album is still hailed as one of the greatest of all time.

Their legendary 1990 Spike Island gig drew 27,000 fans and became known as ‘Madchester’s Woodstock’, even inspiring a movie.

Bassist Mani – Gary Mounfield – was there for every show and also played with Primal Scream from 1997 to 2012, before rejoining the ‘Roses for their stadium-sized comeback.

He was due to perform a special, intimate show in Nantwich where he would have looked back on the band who redefined the British music scene.
