Peacock roundabout in Willaston - plans for new crossing over A51 bypass

Motorists are being warned of major delays and disruption as work to install a new crossing at Peacock roundabout in Willaston is about to start.

The work is scheduled to start on the A51 Nantwich Bypass on January 12th and Cheshire East Council says it could take five weeks to finish.

And it says full road closures are likely to be in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm during the works.

The work will see a new signalised Toucan crossing, new street lighting, a speed limit reduction on the approach to the roundabout, installation of signage and road marking, improvements to footways/cycleways.

Some have already voiced concerns over the impact on heavy good vehicles which have already been diverted in this direction away from Baddington Bridge on the A530 due to the new weight restriction there.

A CEC spokesperson said: “We understand that there is no right time to work in such a key location and this scheme has been carefully planned to minimise disruption.

“Under current Health and Safety legislation and for the safety of our workforce and members of the public, it will be necessary for a road closure to be in place during these works.

“Whilst the works are being completed suitable diversion routes will be in place.

“We will be working on weekdays between 9.30am and 3.30pm. But sometimes we may need to work at weekends to stay on schedule.

“Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times, cyclists may be asked to dismount through the roadworks.

“Bus services will continue but there may be some impact to the service. Check their website for more information including timetable changes.

“Waste collection services will not be affected. Emergency services know about the works and will have access.”

They say local businesses will remain open and accessed.

“Delays are expected and motorists should plan journeys accordingly,” they added.

“Signage will be out in advance of the works starting, and will be located at key points on the road.”

  1. Hi Mr Evans
I am not an expert, but as a council tax payer why would I be expected to clear out the grids,my comment clearly states that with a little forward planning more work could be done at the same time to prevent further disruption, and I applaud people who volunteer for litter picking, I already do my share, but thanks for jumping to your own conclusion on my volunteer work

  2. Everyone an expert here, moan moan moan, kids have to have a safe way to walk to school I managed it and came home for lunch too.
The speed of traffic there is horrendous I hope folk will check the cars have actually stopped before crossing as weekly at Cheerbrook vehicles sail happily through on red without a care. Barry there has already been a notice put in to do clearing of shrubs and litter, if you volunteered you would know!

  3. Simon Fowles says:

Just an exercise being done by this corrupt council so children in Willaston get their free bus travel taken from them. As now the council deem there is a “safe path” to walk to school in Nantwich.

  4. Unfortunately no forward planning will have taken place, like making sure the diversion route is kept free of parked cars and police managing traffic flow.
Also if the road is closed would it not be prudent to litter pick the verge and clean out the grids at the same time, any potholes etc,No didn’t think so.

  5. Don’t worry I’m sure CE will have plenty of workers sitting in vans / leaning on shovels !
To get the job done asap , Knocking off at 3pm

  6. Nantwich businesses will be impacted, particularly retail, food stores, markets for example how will supermarkets manage their delivery schedules and how about services the Leighton be that appointments and A&E . those west of the “problem” will be better placed to travel to Chester which affords more choice. 5 weeks is an. Awful long time and people’s behavioural patterns will probably change which will have a longer term impact on Nantwich. Last ply what is the chance of the work being delayed ?

  7. Colin JUmp says:

Has anyone thought of doing this work at night !!!

  8. Is there any type of roadworks they can manage to do without closing the road? Have they not heard of temporary traffic signals. Absolutely ridiculous.
