The co-owners of a popular Nantwich bar have launched a campaign for more defibrillators in town venues after the tragic death of a customer.
Devoted dad and stepdad Neil Gilbert died after suffering a cardiac arrest while in GOAT bar on High Street in Nantwich on December 21st.
Despite being rushed to hospital, he was pronounced dead on the way, leaving his family devastated.
Now GOAT co-owners Jono Yates and Sam Hulme have launched a fundraiser in the hope of raising enough money to pay for life-saving defibrillators in all bars and pubs in the town.
Sam said: “Neil was Jono’s stepdad and his loss has deeply affected his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.
“In the weeks since Neil’s passing, we’ve been pondering the “what ifs” and looking and how we can make help more readily available for others who may need it in the future.
“When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every second counts. Without a defibrillator, survival rates are between 5–10%. When a defibrillator is used quickly, survival can increase to over 70%
“Yet many hospitality venues, late-night spaces and retailers don’t have a defibrillator.”
The upfront cost of a defib unit is around £1,000, and they require maintenance.
Sam and Jono added: “Together, in Neil’s memory, we want to fund and supply defibrillators to local hospitality venues, late-night venues and retailers.
“These are places people gather. Places where emergencies happen.
“We want to remove the cost barrier and make sure staff and members of the public have immediate access to life-saving equipment when it matters most.
“Local first responders have kindly also offered their time to ensure the people receiving the defibrillators are comfortable operating them.
“This fundraiser is about turning a loss into something that protects others.”
Now they are urging members of the public to donate if they can via their gofundme page, as well as share the story for awareness.
In the first few days they have already raised £500 towards an initial target of £2,000.
