A young Nantwich boxer enjoyed an amazing experience with a friendly bout at the amateur club which once nurtured World Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Twelve-year-old Greg Haelis (42kg), of Jabbin Dabber Boxing Club in Nantwich, travelled to Lancashire for a valuable skills bout against Quinn Cooper-Jones (42kg).

Quinn, also 12, fights out of the Jimmy Eagan Gym, the renowned amateur club where former champion Fury developed his skills.

The non-decision contest, designed to support development and ring education, began at a measured pace as both young boxers took time to assess one another.

As the opening round progressed, Haelis began to edge ahead, using his southpaw stance cleverly to create angles and disrupt Cooper-Jones’s rhythm.

That momentum carried into the second round with Haelis dictating the tempo and positioning around the ring.

Taking instruction well from his corner, he found success by going to the body and maintaining control throughout the exchanges.

In the final round, Cooper-Jones attempted to increase the pressure, but Haelis showed maturity belying his young age.

Maintaining his shape and composure, he used effective footwork to move out of danger and reassert control until the final bell.

As customary in a skills bout, both boxers had their hands raised at the conclusion.

Jabbin Dabber coach Simon Jones said: “It was a strong learning performance for the Nantwich youngster, who is back in action on 13th February on the Wirral CP Club show with fellow boxer Joe Woodward.”
