A man has died in a house fire at a property on Welsh Row in Nantwich, police confirmed today.

Officers have launched an investigation following the death after the fire broke out at around 7.15pm last night (May 19th).

Police and fire attended the scene and on arrival they found a fire in a residential property which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

A man, believed to be in his 60s, was found dead inside the property. His next of kin have been informed.

Police say the cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the death is currently being treated as unexplained.

Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and a cordon is currently in place at the scene.

Three fire engines from Nantwich and Crewe and the aerial ladder platform from Chester attended the fire where smoke was seen billowing from a first floor window.

Cheshire Fire Service said: “Crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to tackle the fire and carried out a search of the property.

“Sadly, one person was found deceased – our thoughts remain with their family at this difficult time.

“Fire crews left the scene after handing over to Cheshire Police, with investigations into the incident ongoing.”

Detective Sergeant George Booth, of Crewe CID, said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at the current time, and we request for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

“Enquires in relation to the incident remain ongoing and I would ask local residents not to speculate while we establish exactly what has taken place.”
