bernard at bookshop 1

Beloved World War Two veteran Bernard Morgan has launched his new book “A Century of Memories” at a special event in Nantwich.

The 102-year-old, who was awarded the MBE in King’s New Year Honours, appeared at the launch in Nantwich Bookshop.

His attendance was announced by Town Crier Devlin Hobson and Bernard was serenaded beautifully by Katie Ashby, lead singer of The D-Day Darlings.

Local authors Mark Potts, a well-known historian, and Tony Marks helped Bernard put together the book about his fascinating life.

Bernard, from Crewe, said: “I am delighted that the book is now published thanks to the hard work of so many people.

“I have had an incredible life, meeting so many special people including members of the Royal Family.

“I should like to thank the Royal British Legion for their care and for facilitating my attendance at events, particularly the return to Normandy in 2024 for the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.”

Bernard was a World War Two RAF Sergeant, a mobile code and cypher operator who landed on Gold Beach on D-Day in 1944.

The book records not just his wartime experiences but also his early life in Longsight, Manchester before moving to Crewe aged 13.

He has a passion for volunteering, notably more than 60 years at Nantwich Show and involvement at Crewe Alexandra Football Club for more than 70 years.

Bernard also volunteered at the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and at the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester and in London.

And there’s no stopping Bernard as he is hoping to be at Nantwich Show again this year at Reaseheath Showground on July 29th.

All profits from his new book will go to the Royal British Legion, for whom Bernard is an ambassador.

His daughter Sheila Borrington said: “He is committed to passing on the message from World War Two – always remember the soldiers, sailors, airmen, airwomen and civilians who gave their lives for the freedom that we have today.”

The book is now available at the Nantwich Bookshop.
