Bouncers Remix by John Godber is the latest production from the Studio team at Nantwich Players, writes Claire Faulkner.
Directed by Simon Porter, this fast-paced, funny and hard-hitting play tells the story of a night out in a Northern town in the 1990s.
We watch the bouncers at work, learning about their lives and experiences; and meet the clubbers who want to have fun on a drunken night out.
I’ve seen Bouncers a few times before, and I know it’s a challenging production to stage.
The four members of the cast play multiple roles with quick character changes throughout the performance. It’s physically demanding and must require lots of energy.
The Players met that challenge and have created a fantastic production, which bring up memories from the 1990s (anyone else remember Gregs?) but also carries themes which are still relevant today.
During the performance I saw, the bouncers mingled with the audience in the foyer.
Keeping in character they asked questions and told us in no uncertain terms that they did not want any trouble tonight.
This interaction helped to build the atmosphere and was well received by everyone.
The cast worked brilliantly together; and with the rest of the studio team have produced something truly special.
The set was a black box, with a neon club sign hanging at the back, with a couple of beer barrels on stage.
However, the audience were transported to various locations including a hairdressers, a taxi ride home and a particularly funny scene in the men’s toilet.
All four cast members gave strong performances.
Jonathan Everitt played Les, James Freeman played Ralph, I loved Pete Ramsey as Judd. Simon Dean as Lucky Eric gave four impactful and emotional monologues which were all outstanding.
I’d happily go and watch this production again, as it’s so fast paced and funny, I think I may have missed a few bits from laughing. Congratulations to all those involved.
Please be advised that this production does contain language which might be considered offensive.
Bouncers Remix is running at The Players until July 19th.
