A man arrested in connection with two stabbings in Crewe town centre is still being questioned in custody, police say.
Horrified shoppers watched as two people suffered knife wounds in broad daylight at WHSmiths and Asda in the Victoria Centre, Crewe.
A 72-year-old woman attacked in WHSmiths remains in North Staffordshire Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A 55-year-old man, who was injured minutes later in a second incident at the Asda store, has been treated for minor injuries and police say he will make a full recovery.
Officers later arrested a 29-year-old local man in the West Street area of Crewe.
A spokesman for Crewe Police said today: “A man arrested in Crewe town centre yesterday remains in police custody being interviewed by detectives.”
Police also denied rumours that the arrested man was Eastern European.
“There were reports that the suspect was Eastern european. That is incorrect.”
Police have said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incidents, but have called on witnesses to get in touch.
“Enquiries are underway to ascertain the circumstances, with detectives keen to speak with any possible witnesses to the incidents or anyone who may have any information relating to this matter.
