Carl Thorpe, assistant manager for a day at Nantwich Town

Nantwich Town has a new assistant manager – for one game only!

Supporter Carl Thorpe will be in the dugout alongside manager Danny Johnson when the Dabbers face Tranmere in the Cheshire Cup.

Carl will be helping Johnson when League Two side visit the Weaver Stadium tomorrow (January 13).

Thorpe said: “The supporters club (NTISA) had a fundraising evening, which was a race night back in November.

“During the night Danny Johnson went up to Rob Woods, chairman of the supporters group, and decided to run an auction for this role I am going to be doing.

“I actually went on my last bid, which was £135.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I have always wanted to manage a football team and I have been laughed at!

“So to have this opportunity is an absolute once in a life-time chance and you have got to grab it when it comes your way.”

Johnson announced his new assistant in his programme notes at the weekend.

And he revealed he had sent Carl on a scouting mission to Bootle, where Tranmere Rovers played in the Liverpool Senior Cup.

Thorpe said: “They were quite rigid and played a 4-4-2. They channeled all their football down the wings.

“But I am not so sure it’s going to be as strong side as when they play us.

“They had quite a few players you could say were first team fringe players and I believe Tranmere will be looking at pushing them out of the club.

“
So I would expect to see a more youthful side against us next Tuesday.”

Carl, known as Schumey to his friends, admits he will get involved from the touchline.

He said: “I like shouting try and give player encouragement or instructions.

“But the players know what they will do when we send them out.

“It’s to make sure they are encouraged, keep their heads up and try to encourage good football.”

With Johnson on the hunt for a new assistant manager, victory over Tranmere could put Carl firmly in the frame!
