Dr Phil Hammond is a very busy man.
However, the GP turned hospital doctor, writer, comic and broadcaster still has time to visit South Cheshire.
You may recognise him from TV shows such as ‘Have I got News for You’, ‘Long Live Britain’ and ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’.
Now, about to start his new comedy tour, Dr Phil is to visit The Lyceum theatre in Crewe on March 18 with his show, “Games to play with your doctor”.
“I’ve been through Crewe many times on the train,” says Phil.
“But this time will be the first time I’m stopping off and staying for a bit.”
The show is billed as a pre-election mini tour where Dr Phil has fun dissecting the health policies of all the political parties and encouraging the audience to ask their doctor questions and to regain patient power.
“I’m excited about the tour and the show,” says Phil.
“Through a series of games I explain to the audience how the get the best out of the NHS, but more importantly the show gives people a laugh.
“You never know what can happen, once a member of the audience asked me for a sick note!”
To many, the role of a GP and that of a comedian seem to be polar opposites.
So are there any similarities?
“Being a doctor and a comedian is all about communication, and both roles centre on human relationships,” he says.
“I enjoy both jobs.
“I enjoy being in front of an audience, and I also enjoy my work at the centre where I spend time with teenagers who have chronic fatigue syndrome.
“I don’t get nervous on stage.
“I learnt a lot when I performed at The Edinburgh Fringe back in 1990.
“I was in a double act called ‘Struck off and Die’ with Tony Gardner, who is currently starring in ‘Last Tango in Halifax’.
“We were both junior doctors at the time.
“The show was more of a therapy session than a comedy, but it taught me a lot.”
Chatting with Dr Phil, gives the impression that this show could be just what the doctor ordered.
If you want a good night out with lots of laughs then this could be for you.
“It’s value for money,” he says.
“You get 90 minutes with me, you’d only get 10 with your normal GP!”
