Nantwich town centre is to benefit from a £1 million facelift, Cheshire East Council has announced today.
Money under the council’s Public Realm initiative will be used for new paving and drainage to enhance the town’s pedestrianised areas.
It will also be used to explore options to create additional parking, especially at weekends, market days and during some of the popular public events staged in the town.
Funding will be a combination of public and private investment.
It’s hoped it will lead to improvements in other quarters of the town in the future which residents have called for.
Nantwich Town Council will also take a key role in driving the public realm projects forward.
Town Cllr Arthur Moran (pictured, right) said: “This is welcome news, and long overdue.
“There’s no doubt some town centre walking areas need attention.
“They will be looking at improving Pepper Street and Churchside Walk in particular.
“The main thing is that they phase the work in so it does not interfere with any of the major events we hold on and around the square.”
A public consultation exercise will engage residents and traders in the planning process.
The investment is intended to enhance the town centre experience for shoppers, visitors and businesses, increasing footfall and boosting the local economy.
Cheshire East Council Leader, Cllr Michael Jones said: “This is only the first phase of a series of projects we have planned for Nantwich and we are confident this will be the catalyst for further development, change and investment in the town.
“Nantwich has a great deal to offer local residents, visitors, small traders and businesses and schemes of this nature go a long way towards injecting a sense of pride, well being and prosperity, which in turn attracts new investment into the area.
“We are keen to deliver these projects as soon as possible.”
Councillor Jones added: “The public’s involvement in the consultation process is paramount and I urge people to get involved in helping to shape their town centre.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Nantwich, which is one of the outstanding market towns of great character that we have in Cheshire East.”
Well needed funding but the issue of parking and routes in and out of Nantwich should be priorty. It seems pointless to be spending money if no one can get in to the town and park. Parking was made even worse when they passed planning for the new doctors which was built on the town car park, reducing parking spaces. People who visit the doctors use this main car park and probably don’t even visit the town centre!
I totally agree Boots and surrounding areas are very untidy and pavements are downright dangerous i have almost stumbled on more than 1 occasion due to the big dips and uneven pavements
i would of thought the pavements outside boots area would be much better for a little attention as they are very uneven pepper street has been done more recently
It’s the swine market side of the town that needs attention more than anything, it’s the buildings housing b&m and boots etc that is the ugliest part of the town. It’s not in keeping with the other beautiful buildings of the town and is a real eyesore.
Please help senior citizens and people with walking aids have a more pleasant walk through town by keeping the paved area at one level.
