Students Slam Poetry Competition

Imaginative English students were inspired to write after receiving top poetry tips from a Nantwich poet.

Nantwich Words & Music Festival volunteer Helen Kay visited the A-Level group at South Cheshire College to raise the profile of the festival’s poetry competition among young people.

The week-long festival runs from October 12 to 18 and will feature a mix of music artists including UK Chart Topper Barbara Dickson, The Christians and The Magic Numbers.

It celebrates poetry in a variety of forms, and will welcome 2014 COSTA award-winning poet Jonathan Edwards and Kim Moore to judge the festival’s poetry competition.

Students were encouraged to practise their creativity and writing skills and enter the festival’s competition and Poetry Slam.

A Poetry Slam is competitive poetry where the emphasis is on good writing and performance and is based on the warmth of audience response.

Helen Kay said: “I hope by speaking to the students, I have planted the seed of writing poetry.

“I wish that I had started writing at the age of 18 because it’s a great age to start, particularly in the modern day of social media and the rise of Poetry Slams.

“I tried to get the point across that writing poetry can be immensely therapeutic and the best way of venting your emotions.

“It would be wonderful to see some of the local younger poets entering the competition, as the local winner will have the chance to meet famous poet Kim Moore and read their poem to an audience.”

Former Madeley High School A-Level student Charlotte Goodland, said: “I’ve been writing poetry for about a year and so really enjoyed the event as it gave us a chance to hear some live poetry.

“I will definitely be entering the poetry competition and me and my dad will be going to the Poetry Slam as part of the Festival.”

Tickets for the Nantwich Words & Music Festival are available from South Cheshire College reception.
