rotary club of Nantwich and himalayas in Nepal

The Rotary Club of Nantwich has helped to raise £1,800 for a school in Nepal.

The Nantwich club, officially ‘twinned’ with the Rotary Club of the Himalayan Gurkhas, will help fund a water and sanitation block for 25 children and staff of Golmaraja Lower Secondary School.

The block was destroyed in the devastating earthquake which struck Nepal in April last year.

Rotarian Lilbahadur Gurung, from the Nepal club, said: “The Twinning of the Nantwich and The Himalayan Gurkhas is another chapter in the history of our two clubs.

“On behalf of my club President and members, I would like to thank all those who have supported the proposal of our clubs ‘twinning’ including Barry Evans without whose initiation it would not have been possible.

“I, with The Himalayan Gurkhas, are very grateful to the Nantwich club which has already done so much for the needy people in the remote hills of Nepal.”

John Crowe, chairman of the International Committee, said: “There are so many people in Nepal whose lives we can improve with a little help.

“The earthquake last year killed more than 9,000 people, and many of the survivors are still without homes, schools and even water.

“We will continue to raise funds to finance water and refurbishment projects in remote villages and schools.

“One project, for example, will save people having to walk three hours down the mountain to collect water then more than three hours back up with heavy water containers on their backs.

“The Shree Ghanpokhara Village has 27 households with 165 people who have been without water since the earthquake struck.

“The village is very remote – a 14-hour cross-country drive in a 4×4 from Kathmandu.

“We are aiming to raise £5,000 to repair this damage so they have at least one standpipe between five houses.”
